Speech Title: Microstructure of Enhanced Aluminum Alloys Studied by In-Situ Electron Microscopy
Abstract: Twin-roll cast aluminum alloys exhibit higher supersaturation of the solid solution in comparison with direct-chill cast ones. Therefore they are more susceptible to the exposure to elevated temperatures and the final microstructure strongly depends on all conditions of materials processing. In general, thermo-mechanical treatments that are often well established for direct-chill cast alloys, could not be directly applied to twin-roll cast materials. Hence appropriate new materials processing conditions should be established for each new material. Although computer simulations play an important role in the design of alloys processing, any fast experimental confirmation of processes and mechanisms of microstructure transitions occurring in materials during heat treatment could significantly improve the resulting predicted models. In-situ electron microscopy is the most powerful tools for such investigations enabling direct observations of microstructure evolution in the mesoscopic and microscopic scale. In the present contribution examples of electron microscopy observations performed on several aluminum alloys during in-situ heating will be presented and discussed.
